Residency | GOETHE-INSTITUT VILLA KAMOGAWA

It has been almost a year since I departed for Japan to be part of the exquisite Goethe-Institut Villa Kamogawa residency program in Kyoto, Japan. I still look back at my time in this breathtaking country with fond memories and I am honored having been selected to be part of this distinguished artist residency. My thanks go to the entire staff of the Villa Kamogawa for their invaluable help, my fellow residencees Saskia Groneberg, Jeanne Charlotte Vogt, Kay Fingerle and my companions on this journey ❤️

At long last, a small summary of my time there has been made public (video in German and Japanese) with teasers to new and upcoming work:

The work-in-progress footage is featuring appearances by Max Viktor.

Event | GOETHE-INSTITUT: Creators@Kamogawa

It is half-time for me at the marvelous Goethe-Institut Villa Kamogawa Residency Programme where I was privileged to have the trust and support of the Goethe-Institut staff and Japanese culture and art world professionals. Where I was able to work on an otherwise impossible project; where I stood in awe of the daunting landscapes, sceneries and sprawls of Japan.

Marking the midpoint of this endevour is Creators@Kamogawa on June 29 2019, an interdisciplinary event organized by the Goethe-Institut Villa Kamogawa, in which the resident artists engage in a conversational format on stage about themes and topics influencing their work with Japanese experts from other disciplines.

Creators@Kamogawa

Event: 29 June 2019, 3pm
Part 1: KOSMOS PARK with Saskia Groneberg (Fine Art) and Tomoki Yamauchi (Aesthetics, Garden Art)
Part 2: DER FLÜCHTIGE KÖRPER (The Elusive Body) with An Laphan (Fine Art) and Hideto Fuse (Art Critic, Anatomy)

Residency | The Villa Kamogawa Residency (May 9 – Aug 6 2019)

I am humbled and delighted to announce that I have been selected for Group 2 of the prestigious GOETHE-INSTITUT VILLA KAMOGAWA Residency Programme in Kyoto, Japan from May 9 – August 6 2019.

I am very grateful for the Goethe-Institut to select my project and guide my research for a multi-part video installation about radical tendencies in buddhist doctrine and its influence on Japanese society.

Scholarship | The American Scholarship (Jul-Dec 2018)

For all of you I unfortunately haven’t been able to get in touch with personally:

After a thorough application process I have been granted the USA-SCHOLARSHIP by the Bavarian State Ministry of Sciences and the Arts. I am scheduled to board my plane this Sunday, July 1st 2018, and to spend the next six months in the United States of America, most of this time in the glistening sprawl of Los Angeles.

I am very grateful for this wonderful opportunity to pursue a project I dreamed about realizing ever since I became an artist and wish you well for the remainder of the year before we meet again.

BAD STREAM – SEX CRIES (2018)

music video (6’11”, 2018)
1.85:1 aspherical widescreen

The video for BAD STREAM’S new single SEX CRIES is a portrayal of insomnia in the age of social disconnect. It pits the drug and technology-infused upper-and-downer lifestyle against the critical mythology of the BAD STREAM concept album in kinetic freeze frames of excess and loneliness.

A ROSEMARY PRAYER (2017-ongoing)

A ROSEMARY PRAYER is an ongoing speculative-memory narrative. It tells the oral history of the disappearance of a person and its repercussions.
It will be released through cinematic fragments, suspected to be part of a coherent narrative megastructure.

STATE (2016/2017) from An Laphan on Vimeo.

STATE is an ongoing interdisciplinary series of one-minute long audiovisual miniatures. It deals with descriptions of liminal conditions; absurd snapshots of an in-between condition, that can be deciphered as transgressions in the private, the interpersonal and the social.

The ongoing series will be annually released in cycles (of three miniatures each).

In collaboration with SEBASTIAN SCHÖNFELD.

SEMBLANCE (2017)

2-channel video installation (1’00” loop, 2017)
2·1.78:1 aspeherical widescreen, quadrophonic sound

SEMBLANCE (2017) from An Laphan on Vimeo.

The 2-channel video installation SEMBLANCE deals with questions deriving from the beaudrillardian terms of HYPERREALISM and the SIMULACRUM. It centers around the question of how to dissimulate an image without an obvious original.
The objects seen in moving-image are 3D-scanned representations of sculptural works of the artist. The sculptures themselves are created with imagery associated with moving-image (film, animation, video art, etc.) in mind. Thus, the established medial feedback loop further blurs the line of what is and what is not the origin of the image.
