BOD_ALP_A0_BORDERDELETE are failed attempts of mapping my own body. They are composites of close-up body pictures, stitched together with sallelite imaging software in order to create incomplete, yet absurdly high resolution continents of the body.

BAD STREAM – SEX CRIES (2018)

music video (6’11”, 2018)
1.85:1 aspherical widescreen

The video for BAD STREAM’S new single SEX CRIES is a portrayal of insomnia in the age of social disconnect. It pits the drug and technology-infused upper-and-downer lifestyle against the critical mythology of the BAD STREAM concept album in kinetic freeze frames of excess and loneliness.

STATE (2016/2017) from An Laphan on Vimeo.

STATE is an ongoing interdisciplinary series of one-minute long audiovisual miniatures. It deals with descriptions of liminal conditions; absurd snapshots of an in-between condition, that can be deciphered as transgressions in the private, the interpersonal and the social.

The ongoing series will be annually released in cycles (of three miniatures each).

In collaboration with SEBASTIAN SCHÖNFELD.

SEMBLANCE (2017)

2-channel video installation (1’00” loop, 2017)
2·1.78:1 aspeherical widescreen, quadrophonic sound

SEMBLANCE (2017) from An Laphan on Vimeo.

The 2-channel video installation SEMBLANCE deals with questions deriving from the beaudrillardian terms of HYPERREALISM and the SIMULACRUM. It centers around the question of how to dissimulate an image without an obvious original.
The objects seen in moving-image are 3D-scanned representations of sculptural works of the artist. The sculptures themselves are created with imagery associated with moving-image (film, animation, video art, etc.) in mind. Thus, the established medial feedback loop further blurs the line of what is and what is not the origin of the image.

FLAW (2013/2016)

1-channel video (2’15”, 2013/2016)
2.00:1 aspherical widescreen, stereophonic audio

FLAW explores the cartography of the body through extreme close-ups of one’s own physical ‘imperfections‘, accompanied by a soundtrack full of distortions and acoustic textures by SEBASTIAN SCHÖNFELD (OWL YEAH).
A clinical examination of body parts and an honest, intimate self-portrait whose images highlight specific details – hair follicles, freckles, blemishes, pores, orifices, cuts. It is nearly impossible to identify what is shown with images bordering the abstract. (Text: POST BROTHERS)

VICIOUS – IS SHE WORTH IT? (2016)

2-channel music video (4’12”, 2016)
2x 1.66:1 aspherical widescreen

The music video for the song “IS SHE WORTH IT?” by Viennese band VICIOUS is an experiment to combine lessons I learned from filmmaking and installative video art. It features the two most common archetypes of music video style: the narrative music video and the performance music video, both of which I see usually heavily intercut.

What would happen if I treated it as 2-channel video installation to separate the band from the story and hence seperate the narrative spaces to bypass the rapid-fire editing most common in commercial music videos?

Further, I tried to explore, how the girl they sing about would react to the song. What if “Is she worth it?” becomes “Am I worth it?”

LIGHT SLEEPER (What if my bed is just a shelf for my body?) (2015)

LIGHT SLEEPER (What if my bed is just a shelf for my body?) is an attempt of dealing with insomnia in threshold between dream and daydream and the limits of describing the compulsive world of thought of an insomniac by means of installation, sculpture, object and sound.

It presents the room as a stage, solely occupied by a free-floating sculptural structure hovering over the bed, accompanied by an ambient sound installation, in which the nocturnal noises of a bedroom – the circulation of the heater, the occasional night traffic on the street, random electrical discharge – are hyperreal, in the way only an insomniac can perceive sound in red-eyed phases of unrest. Headphones reveal an ongoing, unbroken stream of consciousness, nearly intelligible words, an almost formulated inner monologue, thought loops that keep the sleeper from sleeping.

Subversively, the installation plays with the irony inherent in the exhibition space: a hotel, an anonymous transfer zone, exclusively built for resting; albeit resting, sleeping is impossible in the traffic of the exhibition, in the unfamiliarity of a hotel bed.

IN EXHIBITION

The installation has been shown in the group exhibition ZIMMER FREI (with Simone Kessler, Johannes Evers, Bianca Patricia, Federico Delfrati, Timur Lukas, Lenka Richterová, Mari Iwamoto, Despo Sophocleous, Johannes Karl, Julia Pfaller, Moritz Kipphardt, Anton Bošnjak, Gülbin Ünlü), curated by Mehmet Dayi in the Hotel Mariandl Oct 13-18 2015.

EVA PERSONA (2015)

EVA PERSONA is a series of artworks that challenges the concept of the portrait. The artworks investigate the limitations of depicting a human face, hence asking questions about the properties and conditions of being a person.

The face is presented through flatbed-image planes as well as time-based video representations in two-, three- and four-dimensional projections.

VON DER BIENE ZUR WESPE (2013)

mixed-material assemblage

About life and death by reference to the honey bee and the scoliid wasp in two artefacts.

FROM THE BEE TO THE WASP simulates the object fetish of altars and reliquary shrines. The boxes show an ironic depiction of vanitas, in which the life-giving effects of bees are juxtaposed the parasitic and deathbringing qualities of the wasp.

Inside the bee box (left): bee larvae, honey, blossoms, fruit kernel, a belly button and a fruit.
Inside the wasp box (right): a rose chafer in epoxy resin (pierced), the idea of the wasp as parasite, the shells of her hosts, one orange peel.

In honor of the hermeticist poetry.
